French Graduate Program

What makes Maryland unique for French Graduate Studies?

When you join a graduate program in French and Francophone studies at Maryland, you join a vibrant community of students, scholars and teachers in whom you will find support for the duration of your studies and beyond. The interdisciplinary nature of the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures and the College of Arts and Humanities facilitates collaborative work across disciplines, languages, media, centuries, and fields in innovative ways. Students are encouraged to pursue graduate certificates in affiliated programs such as Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Comparative Literature, and Digital Humanities, as well as participate in Graduate School Field Committees in Film Studies and in Medieval and Early Modern Studies, in order to take a deep-dive into their research topic and acquire some of the most cutting-edge theoretical and critical perspectives.

Located in the Washington D.C. metro area, the graduate program in French at the University of Maryland is uniquely located to help you thrive in your professional and academic development. The area is home to over 50,000 French speakers from around the world, and is home base to many international organizations and federal agencies. The program fosters close ties with several embassies, including the Embassy of France in Washington D.C., Alliance française de Washington D.C., and the Québec Bureau in Washington.

The nation’s capital also provides a rich cultural life, with the Kennedy Center, National Symphony Orchestra and the National Opera alongside many casual venues for theater and popular music. At the heart of it are the many world-class (but free!) museums of the Smithsonian Institution, including the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Museum of Natural History, the National Museum of the American Indian, the National Museum of American History and the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the National Gallery of Art.

As one of the US’s leading public research universities, the University of Maryland offers outstanding resources for advanced research, including being part of the Big Ten’s Consortium on Institutional Cooperation. It is also located in close proximity to several major libraries and archives, including Library of Congress, the National Archives, and the Folger Shakespeare Library, which offer invaluable resources for graduate research. Its close proximity to other leading institutions, such as Georgetown, George Washington, Howard, and Johns Hopkins Universities, also facilitates collaboration between researchers and institutions in French and Francophone studies.

Information for International Graduate Students

The University of Maryland is dedicated to maintaining a vibrant international graduate student community.
