Less Commonly Taught Languages - Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) CourseShare

Would you like to learn a less commonly taught language at UMD?

The Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) is an academic consortium of 14 top-tier research universities that are also members of the Big Ten Conference. Through this academic alliance over 500 Less Commonly Taught Language (LCTL) courses have been offered by means of CourseShare.

Less commonly taught languages are offered as part of the BTAA CourseShare program, which allows you to participate virtually in courses that are not offered here at UMD. Courses are taught online either synchronously or asynchronously.

All course materials for BTAA CourseShares are accessed through the host institution's course management platform (e.g., Canvas or Blackboard). As it takes additional time for an account to be set up at a host institution, students should register at least two weeks prior to the course start date listed on Testudo. Course dates are set by the host institution and may not match the UMD academic calendar.

BTAA CourseShare courses are available for all UMD undergraduate and graduate students. UMD faculty are not eligible to take CourseShare courses.

BTAA CourseShare FAQ

How do I find the courses on Testudo?

Courses are usually under the SLLC (School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures) course prefix on Testudo.

How does registration work?

You should register for the course on Testudo at least one week in advance of the start date indicated for the course. Keep in mind that some Big10 schools begin their semester earlier or later than UMD does, and this process takes time. Your access to the course will not be immediate, and may take a week or even longer.

  1. Fill out the BTAA CourseShare Enrollment Permission google form to remove the registration block.
  2. Register for the course on Testudo.
  3. The UMD Registrar adds the student to the BTAA course roster.
  4. The host institution creates a local record for you and adds you to your course roster.
  5. The UMD Registrar contacts the student about activating their new email/account for the host institution.
  6. Activate your new host institution email/account and access your class information.

What if I'm interested in a language that isn't offered?

Courses are offered depend on scheduling, available instructors, and student demand, so if you are interested in a language not currently listed on Testudo, please contact sllccourseshare@umd.edu.
