Professor Naharro-Calderón Organizes Transatlantic Colloquium Concert in Honor of Juan Ramón Jiménez's Itineraries
Professor José M. Naharro-Calderón, of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Maryland, organized a series of events on October 26, 2017, to commemorate the centennial of the publishing of Juan Ramón Jiménez’s Diary of a Newlywed Poet (Diario de un poeta recién casado, 1917). The day’s activities included a colloquium, “European Sights and Sounds and USA Landscapes,” at St. Mary’s Hall Multipurpose Room on campus with the participation of guests and colleagues from different departments. The event also featured a series of 12 watercolors titled ITINERARIOS, by Spanish artist Juan Gómez Macías, inspired by the works of Juan Ramón Jiménez, a Spanish Civil War exile and former professor at UMD. After a full day of stimulating talks, the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain in D.C. hosted a wonderful concert Titled “Zenobia & Juan Ramón Jiménez’s Itineraries.” The concert featured poems by the 1956 Literature Nobel Prize recipient set to music by Carlos José Martínez Fernández, soprano by Anaïs Naharro-Murphy, and piano by David Hughes.
