As the Coordinator for Diversity Initiatives, Dr. Canabal will serve as a liaison with the UMB and UMBC Graduate Schools.
Congratulations to Senior Lecturer Dr. Evelyn Canabal Torres, who has recently assumed the new, half-time position of Coordinator in the Graduate School office of Diversity Initiatives. With a PhD in Spanish and Portuguese from UMD, as well as MA and BA degrees from our campus, Dr. Canabal brings a wealth of professional experience to her new position. She specializes in heritage language education and regularly teaches upper-division courses in Latin American literature and culture in addition to upper and lower division courses in Spanish language acquisition. As the Coordinator for Diversity Initiatives, Dr. Canabal will serve as a liaison with the UMB and UMBC Graduate Schools in our tri-campus alliance PROMISE, an NSF-sponsored, multi-year project to increase the number of doctoral students entering the professoriate in STEM fields. She also will organize PROMISE events at UMD. In addition, Dr. Torres will direct an annual colloquium series offered by the GS in collaboration with USG on preparing URM students for graduate education.
