German Majors receive prestigious scholarships and awards

We are pleased to recognize the Germanic Studies majors who have received prestigious scholarships and awards this spring. 

Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Germany

Sarah Marsteller, a senior double majoring in History and Germanic studies, has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Germany for the 2016-17 academic year. After her Fulbright year, she will pursue work that builds on her German skills and experiences such as the German American Heritage Center or the German Historical Institute. After a few years of working she hopes to pursue a master's degree.

Brady Fauth, a Germanic Studies and English major, will be participating in the Fulbright US Teaching Assistantship program in Austria next year. Starting in September, he will be an English teacher at the Bundesrealgymnasium in Reutte, Austria.

German Society of Maryland Merit Award: The purpose of the German Society of Maryland is to preserve and promote the German heritage, language and traditions through educational, social, and benevolent programs and to develop the unity and continuity of the German American community in the State of Maryland. This program provides up to 3 awards of $1,000.00 each to outstanding students at Maryland colleges and universities who have declared a German major. All three awards went to our German double-majors!

Andrew Nixon is currently a senior planning on taking an extra year and a half to graduate with a degree in Biology and a degree in German. He plans on studying abroad in Berlin in Germany in the upcoming academic year.

Austin Bourgerie is a Computer Science and German double major. Austen currently serves as the ARHU Ambassador and is planning on teaching English in Germany for a gap year.

Thomas Harris is also a Computer Science and German double major. Thomas has been studying German since the 8th grade and is planning on studying abroad in Germany for a semester.

The Anneliese and Alfred Strauch Scholarship for Language Study was established in 2003 by the Department of Germanic Studies faculty member Dr. Gabriele Strauch, in memory of her parents. Each Spring, the Scholarship recognizes the outstanding efforts of 2 to 3 German majors or double majors, who hold Junior standing at the University of Maryland.

Katherine Mosley is a Russian Language and Literature and Germanic Studies double major studying to be a translator or a language teacher. Katie is involved with the Band- the Mighty Sound of Maryland and Pep Band- as a clarinet player and is currently appointed as the President of the German Club and an appraiser for Destination Imagination

Evan Peaco is a native of Portland, Maine, and a sophomore student at the University of Maryland, College Park, currently pursuing a double degree in Aerospace Engineering and Germanic Studies. He intends on studying abroad in Germany in the near future. After graduation, Evan plans on pursuing a Master's degree in Engineering - possibly at a German university.

Graduate School’s Outstanding Graduate Assistant Award for 2016

Approximately 4,000 UMD graduate students also serve the campus as administrative, research, or teaching assistants. The Graduate School has established this new award to recognize and honor the outstanding contributions that Graduate Assistants provide to students, faculty, departments, administrative units, and the University as a whole. The award conveys the honor of being named among the top 2% of campus Graduate Assistants in a given year.

Eileen Sellman, a German Studies MA student, has been awarded an Outstanding Graduate Assistant Award from the University of Maryland.
