The university supports a diverse and vibrant community of poets rooted in a distinguished, international history of literary production. Former faculty poets include Nobel Prize winner Juan Ramón Jiménez, who taught in the Department of Spanish from 1948-1951, and Reed Whittenmore, who twice served as poet laureate of the United States and taught in the Department of English from 1968-1984.

Our current award-winning faculty poets include Elizabeth Arnold, Michael Collier, Ahmad Karimi-Hakkak, Fatemeh Keshavarz, Maryland State Poet Laureate Stanley Plumly, Juan Carlos Quintero-Herencia and Joshua Weiner. These faculty continue the university’s impressive literary traditions through their poetry, scholarship and teaching.

The MFA Program in Creative Writing at the university is nationally ranked and our graduates are the recipients of many distinguished awards and fellowships. They include winners of the National Poetry Series competition and have gone on to receive Stegner Fellowships and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.  

National Poetry Month was inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996. Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world with schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers, and poets celebrating poetry’s vital place in our culture.
