2019-20 ARHU Boren Recipients

The scholarships provide up to 20k for two semesters of critical language study.

Of the eight students from the University of Maryland (UMD) who received 2019-20 Boren Scholarships, six are from the College of Arts and Humanities (ARHU). The scholarships are part of the Department of Defense's National Security Education Program and provide for up to $20,000 for two semesters of critical language study. In exchange for funding, Boren Award recipients agree to work in the federal government for a period of at least one year.  

ARHU 2019-20 Boren Scholarship Awardees:

Margaret Hayden '19 Arabic and French will study Arabic in Morocco. She is a member of the Arabic Flagship Program and a global terrorism studies minor. During her time at Maryland, Hayden participated in the College Park Scholars International Studies program.

Margaret is a senior pursuing degrees in both Arabic and French, as well as a minor in Global Terrorism Studies, and is a member of the Arabic Flagship Program. Margaret participated in the College Park Scholars International Studies program. 

Andrew Lyman '19 Arabic studies and government, will study Arabic in Morocco. Lyman is a member of the Arabic Flagship Program and participated in the Global Fellows Program. He began studying Arabic in high school through the STARTALK Arabic program at Howard Community College and took part in a National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI) program in Morocco. Lyman interned in the Office of Senator Chris Van Hollen, the Ethiopian Community Development Council and with the Embassy of the Kingdom of Jordan.

Madison Meyer '19, individual studies (international relations and security studies), will study Arabic in Morocco. Meyer is minoring in Arabic and French and is a member of the Arabic Flagship Program. At Maryland, she participated in the Honors Humanities Program of the Honors College and the Global Fellows Program. She currently lives in the Arabic Cluster of Language House. Meyer interned with the US Department of State and with the Office of Congresswoman Robin Kelly and served as a student researcher for the Gibran Chair for Peace and Values at Maryland.

Jacqueline Stomski '19 Arabic studies, will study Arabic in Morocco. Stomski is a member of the Arabic Flagship Program. At Maryland, she participated in the Global Fellows Program and served a a member of the ARHU Dean's Advisory Board. She was also in the University Honors Program of the Honors College. Stomski interned with the US Department of State's Bureau of Populations, Refugees and Migration, with the International Organization for Migration in Cairo, Egypt and was a policy and advocacy intern for Mercy Corps.

Joanna Wolfgram '20 Arabic Studies and government, will study Arabic in Morocco. At Maryland, she is a member of  the University Honors Program of the Honors College and has participated in the Global Fellows Program. Wolfgram has interned with the National Defense University as well as with the Montgomery County Family Justice Center. She also participated in the UMD Speaking Partners Program as well as in the Paper Airplanes English Tutoring Program and Alternative Spring Breaks.

Aisac Accad '20 government, received a Boren scholarship to study Bahasa Indonesia in Indonesia, which she declined in favor of a Critical Language Scholarship for summer 2019, also for the study of Bahasa Indonesia. She is a member of the Honors Humanities Program of the Honors college and has participated in the Global Fellows Program/ She has interned with the Office of the House Democratic Whip, Steny Hoyer, with the UMD Center for Advanced Study of Language, and with the Charles County Government.

Ryan Garfinkel '19 government, will study Swahili in Tanzania.

Emily Marks '19 government, will study French and Wolof in Senegal.
