The Russian program offers a major and a minor. The major and most classes, especially language classes, are small and students enjoy a high degree of faculty-student interaction. The current faculty are well-known in Russian literature, culture, film and language curriculum and design, and include the authors of the popular textbook series Russian in Stages.


Maya Brin Residency

Maya Brin Residency

The Maya Brin Residency was established in March 2012 and funds a residency, which brings leading Russian scholars, artists and cultural figures to campus for short-term stays to promote Russian culture, and a new permanent teaching position.

All students enrolled in Russian courses have regular access to the faculty, and majors may enroll in a 1-credit colloquium each year designed just for majors that explores a variety of academic and professional topics and provides the opportunity for students to interact regularly with each other and the faculty.


Honors and Awards

Students are encouraged to pursue the rich opportunities offered as a result of our proximity to the nation’s capital, such as internships with government agencies or think tanks, as well as cultural events.

Russian students are eligible for a variety of national and campus-wide scholarships, including ones that support study abroad and residence in the Language House.

Individualized attention and advising

Russian for Heritage Learners

Special courses intended for students with early experience with Russian language, including work with reading and writing, vocabulary building, and advanced literature and culture courses are offered every semester.

Internships in the Washington DC area

Students are encouraged to pursue the rich opportunities offered as a result of our proximity to the nation’s capital, such as internships with government agencies or think tanks, as well as cultural events.

Advising

The Russian program undergraduate advisors are available for consultation about any aspect of your study of Russian. To ensure that you have fulfilled all the requirements for graduation, the department recommends that every major confer with the advisor at registration time each semester.
