Undergraduate Certificate in East Asian Studies

The undergraduate certificate in East Asian studies is a 24-credit course of instruction designed to provide specialized knowledge of the cultures, histories and contemporary concerns of the peoples of China, Japan and Korea. It will complement and enrich a student's major. The curriculum focuses on language instruction, civilization courses and electives in several departments and programs of the university. It is designed specifically for students who wish to expand their knowledge of East Asia and demonstrate to prospective employers, the public and graduate and professional schools a special competence and set of skills in East Asian affairs.

Admission: The program is open to all students in good standing. Students should declare their intention to enroll to the certificate coordinator to plan their individual program.

Requirements

Certificate Requirements (24 credits)

 

1. HIST284: East Asian Civilization I (3 credits) and HIST285: East Asian Civilization II (3 credits)

2. Six semester hours of introduction to Chinese, Japanese or Korean: CHIN101: Elementary Chinese I (6 credits); JAPN101: Elementary Japanese I (6 credits);  a sequence of two introductory Korean courses: EITHER: KORA101: Elementary Korean I (3 credits) and KORA102: Elementary Korean II (3 credits) OR KORA211: Introductory Readings for Speakers of Korean I (3 credits) and KORA212: Introductory Readings for Speakers of Korean II (3 credits)

3. Electives: Students must complete 12 hours of electives selected from formally approved courses on East Asia. Each semester, CEAS posts a list of formally approved courses.

Additional Requirements

If you find a course related to East Asia that is not on the list, please contact the coordinator. Note: Nine of the elective credits must be from upper division (300-400 level) courses.

No more than nine credits from any department/program may be applied toward the certificate.  No more than nine credits applied to the student's major may also apply to the certificate.

No more than nine credits of the courses applied toward the certificate may be transferred from other institutions.
